I work downtown and my fiancée works in the southwest suburbs (Oak Lawn). We're looking for a 2BR apartment close to the Midway or Pulaski Orange Line stops so that I can get downtown easily without living too far from her work.

What is the best way to track down apartments in the Clearing/Garfield Ridge/West Elsdon/West Lawn neighborhoods? I've noticed that Craigslist doesn't seem to have many listings for these neighborhoods and wondered if there are any easier ways to find available apartments.

If you have the ability to do it, drive around the neighborhoods. In those neighborhoods which are more ethnic Chicago and more family friendly, a lot of people advertise apartments in the neighborhood. Copy down the phone numbers on the advertisements posted in the area and call them. A lot of the buildings are small and privately owned.

You might also try the Chicago Reader online listings. They give you a way to search by neighborhood and by ZIP code -- and their filtering function actually works because the old Craigslist trick of throwing in a bunch of irrelevant keywords doesn't work for those listing their apartments in Chicago Reader.

The SouthtownStar look in the classifieds there.

There are two neighborhood papers that we get with a good amount of apartments for rent. There is the Southwest News Herald and the Clear Ridge Reporter. Check out the link below. I live on the west end of Garfield Ridge. I would look for an apartment in either Garfield Ridge or Clearing. Both are a nicer/safer areas than West Elsdon and West Lawn. There are a lot of apartments to look between 63rd and 65th between Central and Harlem. Also there are many apartments above the businesses along archer ave.

Both Garfield Ridge and Clearing have CTA busses that will bring you to the orange line.

If you need more choices send me your address in a message and I will clip the classifieds from the Clear Ridge Reporter and mail them to you. If you have any questions about the nicest areas just send me a message.
