I've heard good things about this Michigan Ave; we'll have to check it out. Is the U. of Chicago worth checking out?
If you're interested in going to the University of Chicago, yes, then definitely check it out. It's on a quarter system, so students won't be back yet. The campus is gorgeous, gothic style for the most part. It's right down Lake Shore Drive to the Museum of Science and Industry, then a little west to the University.

Waves in Lake Michigan are almost entirely dependent on wind. It's possible you'll be there on a day you could actually boogie board, but more than likely the water will be calm. For reasons I don't really understand, lifeguards don't let you go out further than waters about 4ft deep, particularly at the tourist-heavy beaches. So the beaches are used more for just splashing around than any actual water activity (surfing/boogie boarding/etc).
