I'd prefer to see ourselves as those in the station, lending a hand to those who want to get on the train.
Or, laborers working on the track.
As regards the "train metaphor" for salvation....
~June has the funny feeling that if one is to truly go with the metaphor of the train, vis-a-vis salvation (of which she would know nothing) then perhaps the following would be somewhat apt:
One stands on the side of the tracks, waiting, and the train approaches, and one waits for it's approach. That is not to say that the train actually stops; rather, it can go wizzing by, and one just stands, watching in wonder. One watches car, after car, after car without any true volition as to how to stop that which is unstoppable, much less, embark upon it. As such, one makes note of the various cars, the power that is behind and propels the train, and awaits, from there.
Trains are very interesting entities....All the various cars are all inter-connected, and without them, would not comprise what we know of as being a "train." No one car is "better" than another; they are all merely in need of one another in order to make up the overall composition of what we call a "train." The force and speed behind the train is predetermined by forces beyond our will or control; we have little say in that, and our call to faith rests in accepting that. We do, however, have a say in terms of how we react to, and accept the passing by of that which we would like to find a way to be a part of...
Therein lies your salvation.
Your attitude towards, and acceptance of, and knowledge as regards what to do with those uncertainties, those unknowns, those forces beyond your own...

Take gentle metaphorical care,

Like I said. June should be captain.
