I know this is not what your are attempting to get at, but the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or Israel (Gen. 35:10) were then Israelites.

The name Jew came later and is a derivative of the patriarch Judah, in distinction from those of the ten tribe kingdom.

But I'm guessing your approach is from a spiritual vs. physical or hereditary aspect rather than origin of name.

I read a post on another forum that seems like it applies here: "Just because a cat has kittens in a stove don't make the kittens biscuits." Now that may not be the exact quote, but it close enough. My point is being in Israel don't necessarily make u Jewish or an Israeli. Just like everyone in America is not an American.

being Jewish is an ethnic heritage, isn't it? not necessarily pertaining to where one lives..certainly those exiled and not living in Israel, esp when it wasn't even a nation..were certainly Jewish.

Yes, a Jew is an Iraelite. As an Israelite is someone who is a descentant of Jacob/Israel. Jacob/Israel had twelve sons. Jews are descendants of these twelve sons. So that would make all Jews- Israelites.

Here is a link I found quite interesting..... Who is a Jew?

snippet:
The original name for the people we now call Jews was Hebrews. The word "Hebrew" (in Hebrew, "Ivri") is first used in the Torah to describe Abraham (Gen. 14:13). The word is apparently derived from the name Eber, one of Abraham's ancestors. Another tradition teaches that the word comes from the word "eyver," which means "the other side," referring to the fact that Abraham came from the other side of the Euphrates, or referring to the fact Abraham was separated from the other nations morally and spiritually.

Another name used for the people is Children of Israel or Israelites, which refers to the fact that the people are descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel.

The word "Jew" (in Hebrew, "Yehudi") is derived from the name Judah, which was the name of one of Jacob's twelve sons. Judah was the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel, which was named after him. Likewise, the word Judaism literally means "Judah-ism," that is, the religion of the Yehudim.

Jew is a religious faith and Iraelites is a nation group. There are false Jews which Jesus clearly pointed out.

Abraham was a Hebrew, the first Hebrew, Jacob was named Israel for a nation, Judah was the culmination along with Benjamin and Levi to be Jews therefore we have many Hebrew which some became Israelites, and then even less became Jews and then many along with Gentiles became Christians.

What about the people of Abrahams time, what of Ishmaels line(Muslims), what of Esaus line, what of the other nine tribes. This is why Jesus came to bring forth the promise to Abraham which many ignore.

Good points thus far.

So the Hebrew Language originated with Abraham? Or perhaps was Adam the first?

I am really trying to figure out this covenant part without going to a set source other than the Bible and what people's heart lead them to believe.

I agree a Jew isn't always a Israelite. After all, they can be broken off. And some are of Satan.

Israel is of God.
