"Based on" eye-witness accounts and eye-witness accounts are two entirely different things. Have you ever watched a "Based on a true story" film?? I rest my case.
Well, I believe the Gospels do describe real events, but do so imperfectly. After all, an objective comparison of the Synoptic Gospels show important discrepancies in accounts of some of Christ's key moments, such as His baptism, crucifixion, and resurrection.
Heck, there's not even consensus on Christ's final words on the cross. Was it, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" "Into your hands I commend my spirit", or "It is finished"? Three different sets of last words with three very different theological consequences.
So in other words, the gospels are about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Only if you overlook the key principles and accept that idea that every eyewitness to any event will report exactly the same details. Any cop can tell you that's not so.

The bible never starts "Based on a true story" since it is the true story.

...or if you overlook the key principle that the Bible is alleged to be written by people who are being guided and inspired by an omniscient deity.
