They believed God is who He said He is and trusted Him to do what He said He would do.

Abel,Enoch,Noah, Moses,Abraham,Sarah,Jacob,Joseph,I believe they displayed their faith by obedience to God and trusting Him, the people of Israel trusted God and went right through the Red Sea, and as they marched around the walls of Jericho their faith brought it down. Rahab the harlot. Gideon-Barak-Samson-Jepthah-David-Samuel and all of the other Prophets. These people all trusted God and as a result they won battles, overthrew kingdoms, ruled their people well, and received what God had promised them, and they were kept from harm, some escaped death by the sword through their faith, others were given great power in battle. Some were made strong again after they had been feeble or sick;they were still capable of making whole armies turn away. But there were others who trusted God and were persecuted and beaten to death, preferring to die rather than turn their backs on God. And these men and women of faith, though they trusted God and won His approval, none of them received all that God had promised them, for God
wanted them to wait and share the even better rewards that were prepared for even us that have Faith and will trust in God.
excerpts from Tyndale NLT Bible paraphrased
