Matt 26:6 “Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table.” (NRSV)

Mark 14:3 “ While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,* as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head.” (NRSV)

Luke 7:36-38 “ One of the Pharisees asked Jesus* to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. 37And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. 38She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment.” (NRSV)

John 12:1-3 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them* with her hair.” (NRSV)

Note: Since Matthew used Mark's gospel as a source, we can expect these two accounts to agree on the facts.

Simon the leper was not the Pharisee. Lazarus' home was not the leper's nor the Pharisee's. Three different houses. Three different women. Three different times.

RESPONSE:

Hardly. Three of the accounts place the incident at Bethany just before the Passover. Same time, same place, different stories.

What does that tell us?

Do you think it is possible more than one person lived in Bethany?

In John 12 Jesus visited Lazarus in Bethany 6 days prior to Passover.

In Matthew 26 Jesus visited Simon the Leper in Bethany 2 days prior to Passover.

In Luke's account chapter 7 it could have been done in the early part of His ministry.

Read each account if you don't believe me. Don't just take one verse and try to build an untenable position on that!

RESPONSE:

Oh come now. Your explanation isn't much different that this one:

“A sinful woman named Mary, the sister of Lazarus, went into the house of Simon the Leper who was a Pharisee, and poured perfume on Jesus’ head and feet.”

Or are you claiming tht it was a different each time?

No, in Luke 7, it wasn't Mary but just an un-named sinner woman.

In Luke 7:22 John the Baptist is still alive. So this event occurred near the beginning of Jesus' ministry.
In Luke, Jesus was just then entering Capernaum: He entered into Capernaum" (Luke 7:1).

In Luke 7, while still in Capernaum, Jesus went to a Pharisees house and Jesus had this happen to Him:
"Luke 7:36-38 Now a certain one of the Pharisees asked Him, that He may be eating with him. And entering into the Pharisee's house,
He reclined." (37) And lo! a woman who was in the city was a sinner. And, recognizing that He is lying down at table in the Pharisee's
house, fetching an alabaster vase of attar" (38) and standing behind, beside the feet of Jesus, lamenting, she begins to rain tears on
His feet, and with the hair of her head she wiped them off and fondly kissed His feet, and rubbed them with the attar."

In John's account, about three years later and 6 days before Passover we have this occur in Lazarus' house in Bethany:

John 12:1-3 Jesus, then, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was who had died, whom Jesus rouses from among the
dead." (2) They make, then, for Him a dinner there, and Martha served.
Now Lazarus was one of those lying back at table with Him." (3) Mary,
then, taking a pound troy of veritable nard attar, very precious, rubs the
feet of Jesus and wipes off His feet with her hair. Now the house was filled
with the odor of the attar."

In Matthew 26, about three years later than what happened to Jesus in Luke's account in Luke 7 and just 2 days before Passover, this occurred:

Matthew 26:1-2 And it occurred, when Jesus finishes all these sayings, He said to His disciples, (2) You are aware that after two days the
Passover is coming,
and the Son of Mankind is being given up to be
crucified."
Matthew 26:6-7 Now at Jesus' coming to be in Bethany, in the house of
Simon the leper, (7) a woman came to Him having an alabaster vase of
attar, very precious, and she pours it down on His head at His lying back
at table."

Mark's account is like Matthew's, happens in the same town, same place, same time:
Mark 14:1-3 Now it was the Passover and the unleavened bread after two
days. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how, laying hold of Him
by guile, they should be killing Him." (2) For they said, "Not in the festival,
lest at some time there will be a tumult of the people." (3) And at His being
in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, at His lying down, a woman
came, having an alabaster vase of veritable nard attar, costly. And
crushing the alabaster vase, she pours it down on His head."

RESPONSE:

Yes. One had to expect some differences was one is writing legends long after the event.

Excerpted from A Concise History of the Catholic Church, By Father Thomas Bokenkotter, SS

"'They (the Gospels) were written to convert unbelievers to faith in Jesus as the Messiah of God, risen and living now in his church and coming again to judge all men.

Their authors did not deliberately invent or falsify facts about Jesus, but they were not primarily concerned with historical accuracy.

They readily included material drawn from the Christian communities' experience of the risen Jesus. Words, for instance, were put in the mouth of Jesus and stories were told about him which, though not historical in the strict sense, nevertheless, in the minds of the evangelists, fittingly expressed the real meaning and intent of Jesus as faith had come to perceive him.

For this reason, scholars have come to make a distinction between the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. "

But now youv'e raised another contradiction. When was John imprisioned and executed? And here we have a historical source too - the writings of the historian Josephus.

But the writers of the gospels were concerned with historical accuracy.

What I find amazing is when you are proven wrong you then throw out a red herring to get us off the scent of the real path you originally took by talking about some goofball who believes they aren't historically accurate.

I raised no contradiction. John was executed near the beginning of Christ's ministry. The sinner woman rubbed Christ's feet with attar.

Three years later and 6 days before Passover Mary rubs the feet of Jesus with attar.
Three years later and two days before Passover a different woman pours attar down His head.

NO CONTRADICTION!

They saved their best for the most important Person in the history of the world. What would you expect?

I'm not so sure Mary or the other woman were rich.
