Read this as they were dabbling in the Occult. We are to take what we read on faith not seek the supernatural through seances.

Wescott and Hort did not believe in the substitution death of Jesus Christ, but that Salvation comes through the believers own efforts through "christ consciousness" in themselves being "christs". It is the same garbage being taught by the New Agers. It is the same lie that has its origins in Genesis 3.

Anyone that would like to could do some research easily on the passages that these folks have taken out of their manuscripts can do so easily via google research.. If the guy mentioned has issues with the law, it doesn't change the verifiable facts of the sources.

Proof of the following please: "...Wescott and Hort did not believe in the substitution death of Jesus Christ, but that Salvation comes through the believers own efforts through "christ consciousness" in themselves being "christs". It is the same garbage being taught by the New Agers. It is the same lie that has its origins in Genesis 3...."

Further this is what Westcott's son wrote about his father's involvement with the Ghostlie Guild:

"..."What happened to this Guild in the end I have not discovered. My father ceased to interest himself in these matters, not altogether, I believe, from want of faith in what, for lack of a better name, one must call Spiritualism, but because he was seriously convinced that such investigations led to no good." (Life and Letters of Brooke Foss Westcott, Vol. I, p.119) ..."

Note also this is not about seances, this is about proving or disproving the kinds of things which happened at them further note that although it seems odd to some now at the time it was a very big thing indeed. I would be much more surprised, honestly, if they had not been involved in some way.

No. It's not.

According to Bruce Metzger (The Text of the New Testament: Its Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration, Third Edition, Oxford University Press, 1992, pages 95-118), the Textus Receptus primarily resulted from the work of a Dutch Roman Catholic priest and Greek scholar by the name of Desiderius Erasmus, who published his first Greek New Testament text in 1516. The first edition of Erasmus' text was hastily and haphazardly prepared over the extremely short period of only five months. (ibid., page 106) That edition was based mostly upon two inferior twelfth century Greek manuscripts, which were the only manuscripts available to Erasmus "on the spur of the moment"

You have to understand some of the history of the New Testament. The original copies have long been lost or destroyed. The Bible we use today was written in Greek, and recopied many times by many people over many years in many places. Yes errors occured in these copies. The Greek Bible in use at the time of the first english translation was based on just a few copies. Since then, many other copies have been found, over 5000 in number in parts and wholes and have been painstakenly compared word for word. Some of these copies are quite old, dating back to about 200 AD. In this work, the older copies are given more weight or importance. As a result of this work, it was discoved that the older copies did not contain John 8, "the woman caught in adultery" Therefore it is noted in many Bibles. If you look at the end of Marks Gospel, your Bible will also likely note that vs. 9-20 were not original and added later.

This is not something to complain about but to rejoice in. As a result of this work, we have a very high degree of confidence that we have the words written by the disciples who wrote the New Testament. This is a whole field of study, if you're interested.

You have to keep in mind also, that those who can't read the original Greek are reading a translation, and all translations have some questionable translating work. Nothings perfect. But through His word, if we are diligent and study, God still reveals His truth, His works and HIs salvation in Jesus Christ.
Origen (185–254 AD), one of the most well known early church fathers wrote:

The differences among the manuscripts have become great, either through the negligence of some copyists or through the perverse audacity of others; they either neglect to check over what they have transcribed, or, in the process of checking, they make additions or deletions as they please.

Some believers, as though from a drinking bout, go so far as to oppose themselves and alter the original text of the gospel three or four or several times over, and they change its character to enable them to deny difficulties in face of criticism. (Against Celsus 2.27)
