...snip...That's why I don't understand how someone can believe in Jesus but not the rest of it.
Because Jesus, to many, is The Ideal Man/Godling. He crosses the line between man and god, or rather, straddles it.
The idealized Jesus is indeed worthy of admiration and emulation - honest, empathic, tolerant, wise and loving.
But an awful lot of the bible is full of silly/contemptible/ridiculous/curious/unbelievable stuff. So, I think it's easy to be a fan of Jesus without buying into the whole Christianity-is-bible-based thing.
Our instruction book chronicling the lessons of our species as we sought to understand God. It CONTAINS inspirations from God interpreted as best they could be by primitive superstitious barbarians who lacked valid knowledge of reality. There are occasional prophesies about Christ to prepare us for Him, to enable us to identify Him, to understand His status, to understand what would happen to Him, and to validate Him well after His death. Like any instruction book . . . it provides material for us to exercise our understanding about right and wrong and good and bad. It is NOT the word of God . . . ONLY Christ is.

The bible is a collection of myths and legends written down by an ancient desert tribe, plus fanciful stories about the real man Jesus, and also containing letters and visions by early evangelists.
It is the written spoken word that contain the principles of truth.
A principle is a universal rule that was established from the foundation of the universe, that is valid today and will continue to will remain constant in perpetuity.
Take for instance, 'In the beginning', the precept of 'eternal' is a state of timelessness. It neither has a beginning, nor an end, nor can it since it is timeless. The opposite of an 'eternal' life process is 'finite' life process, or rather a life process which has a beginning, therefore must be concluded since it has a beginning it must also has an end. Thus it is written in Matthew 24:35, 'Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
Now in Genesis 2:16-17 it is written, 'And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.' However, even the scriptures serve as evidence that the male and female did not physically die on the day the scriptures record that they ate of the imaginary tree. Yet, the serpent will tell you that they died spiritually, yet in James 2:26, it is written; 'For as the body without the spirit is dead,..." that refutes that presumption since the spirit is the life of the flesh.
And of course, the ability to communicate using the spoken word is the Gift of the Spirit which is given unto all men, of a truth, principles are everlasting.
The Bible is a collection of books that provide insight into the minds of those who authored them (and the people they wrote about) and how they perceived God. It is a mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous.
But some people call the Bible the Word of God, which seems would technically make it the fourth member of the Trinity (or Quadrinity?) since, according to the Bible, the Word is God.
the bible is a book of statement that is truly recorded. be ye the statements are of truth, or deception.
