Seriously though. If you're not Catholic, why do you even care?

I can't speak for anyone but myself. For me, it's interesting but nothing more than that.

I don't really follow the notion that this is somehow the beginning of massive decline for Catholicism, aka "Jumping the Shark." All that has happened is that the RCC has recognized two popes who did some tremendously important good things for the RCC. I get that it means a lot more than that to a Catholic, but that's what it means from my point of view. Why would this be the "beginning of the end" for the RCC??

I think it would be nice if all Catholics understood, at least biblically, that all believers are called "saints." The term "saint" I think, over the years, has been made to mean much more than its original intent in the Scriptures.

If those two popes were true believers in Christ's death for their sins then they were already saints prior to having sainthood conferred upon them.

They ARE aware and distinguish between small s saints and Capital S Saints, who are especially heroic saints that are held up for emulation.

Yep.

To answer the original question: Non-Catholics have been proclaiming the decline of the Catholic Church for almost 2,000 years now. Yawn. I'm not worried. The Church will be here till the End.

Fun trivia fact: JPII did ski.

He was once, while Pope, skiing incognito. He was in the lift line and word started getting passed along: "The Pope is here. The Pope is here." The person in front of him in line turned around and said, "The Pope is here." JPII said, "Really?", turned around and said to the person in back of him in line, "The Pope is here."

Yes, but that was snow skiing. As far as we know, there are no snow sharks. It would therefore be impossible for the Pope to jump one.

True. Lots of snow bunnies. Can't say I've seen a snow shark.

I'll bite.

I am interested in great changes in any institution that counts a billion+ followers, was an instrumental force in the very foundation of Western Civilization, a culture that instructs the vast majority of my worldview, and finally is the dominant religion in both of the regions where I have lived the majority of my life, NYC and New Mexico.

Well yes, it means to "Jump" a "Shark", like Fonzy did!
