Is it a sin to enjoy halloween? I'm not talking about worshipping other Gods, or witchcraft, or having evil intentions. I'm talking about putting decorations up, using old fashioned costumes with halloween themes such as spooks, skeletons, jack o lanterns, bats etc. I've done some research on the holiday. It can be a little blurry. But I do know that November 1st is All Saints Day. One thing I've heard is halloween began as a tradition to 'scare' the evil spirits away the night before All Saints Day. And the costume wearing was a way to 'confuse' the bad spirits so they couldn't tell who to attack. Demons are mentioned in the bible (considered fallen angels) so it would not be sinful to believe they exist. What would be wrong with 'scaring' them away? I guess I felt it was OK to enjoy halloween, but am a little confused by some Christians reaction to the holiday. I grew up loving the season and usually look forward to it.
Does anyone have any expertise on this subject? Or any knowledge to share??
Halloween, like Christmas and Easter has become a cultural tradition far more than religious. With Halloween, almost all of the "religious" aspect has gone out of it except or the seriously anal retentive in the religious community. There no problem with having fun on cultural holidays any more than the Fourth, or Labor Day.
There are many here who will tell you that if you celebrate Halloween, you're in for it. You'll be struck by lightning, cast into hell, brought out of hell so you can be struck by lightning again and cast back into hell for good measure.
If you're OK with celebrating it, go for it. It's not a sin. Many churches celebrate by having children come in costume, hand out candy, etc. They just change the name to "Havest Festival" instead of Halloween. Same thing.
If the truth be told... Christians should not celebrate Halloween. It is an unholy holiday. We should celebrate that which God has given us, such as Christmas and Easter.

Thanks!
I let my kids go trick-or-treating. In my small town the folks in town really enjoy seeing the kids. I'm a pastor, but I see no problem with it. My kids don't wear scary costumes, nor do we get into the "horror" side of it, and dress up as zombies, and ghosts, etc. It's a fun holiday to dress up and beg for candy.
