Why exactly did they offer God anything at all? Nothing prior to this event did God dictate to them to give him an offering.

Excellent question.

Nowhere in Genesis did God tell anyone to sacrifice anything.
I have it on good authority 'He', Who has no gender, did not tell the Incas
or the Aztecs to cut out beating hearts nor toss virgins into volcanoes.

Then we have:
Ps 51:16
For you desire not sacrifice; else would I give it: you delight not in burnt offering.

Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
-Ps 40:6

"For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.
-Jer 7:22

In these beginnings God was interacting with His creation , as these people and their descendants were Gods only hope of having man and women as His family......... See God must have shown Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel that a gift to God could invoke a passion for God , as God was spoon feedings them to be selfless ........ So Abel gave a first-ling of His flock as His was sheep man , and Cain was a grain man , but the land was still curses and could only give Thorns and thistles which produces little grain ....................Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel must of had a prophetic calling from God as they could hear His voice of God`s spirit

this reminds me of kids making something in arts in crafts at school and then bringing it to their parents.

Because the plural "Gods" of Genesis represents the "gods" of Psalm 82.

Just like today as in the past, anyone who eats a meal without having to hunt and gather it themselves is a type of god. Back then, I guess it was even more so. It wasn't that long ago that more common people really did have to hunt and/or gather their own food.

The Bible does not say, so we do not need to know, but maybe:

It could have been a case of Eve telling them of the problems they faced because of Adam's sin.

It could have been something they learned from the angels guarding the way to Eden.

It could have been something they felt was good as even though out of Eden they were still supplied with what they needed through God's creation, so they offered some in thanks.

Doesn't matter as the Genesis account is not written as a history book, but for us to learn from what was written as to what is pleasing and not pleasing to God and what is good for us and what isn't and what impacts others when we act on our own and what happens when we ignore God's directions and more.

When you open the Bible, you open the door to the most comprehensive Library on earth.

IMO, we can't know for sure.

Also IMO Able did it out of gratitude to God for forgiving his parents.

Also IMO, Cain dd it to try and gain approval from God or maybe out of envy for Able doing it.

You have a vivid imagination but no Biblical support.

RESPONSE:

You do realize that the story is fictional, don't you? You are apparently expanding it.
