So what about the Christians who lived during the approximately 1900 years until the rise of fundamentalism? Did they all go to hell because they were not fundamentalists?
Every man is rewarded based on their works.
Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
So you are saying that some fundamentalist Christians and / or fanatical Christians are going to hell, right?
The fact that they committed a few atrocities in Jesus' name will not save them.

It speaks for itself. Not everyone that says they are a Christian, is one.
"Many" will say unto me in that day, Lord......etc.. I will say be gone from me ye that worketh iniquity (sin).

Yet all Christians read the same Bible, thus base their actions on the same fundamental belief.
The only difference is that fundamentalist take the Bible literally which severely narrows their options.
Compared to other Christians they change very slowly ( and Christians generally already hardly change their opinion when it comes to their Christian dogmas and morals).

Not really, there are some really poor translations out there.

If there is no growth, then how can they be Christian?

But since the time they became the #1 religion not much has changed.
I'm speaking of individual spiritual growth. Each person is accountable to their lives, not the group.
If our works are good enough, why do we need Jesus?
Who said our works are good enough.....?
They only bring glory to the kingdom if we keep His word.
We need Jesus:
To give our reward, to teach us what HE taught; love, forgiveness, faith,etc..., to prepare the way to our oneness with Him and the Father,to provide the way of repentence, to bring us to the Father, to send the comforter.
godspeed,
freedom
