"Now faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

I don't understand what Paul is conveying here. Of course, I understand the basic message, but the second "hearing by" I don't get. Is Paul saying:
1) Now faith comes by hearing the Word of God" or
2) Now faith comes by hearing, and hearing comes by the Word of God.

Or maybe something entirely different. Can someone please put this into plain English for me.

I think he's saying that our ears are opened to hear.

"hearing" can either refer to either
1. physically hearing with the ears
2. hearing to the point of understanding deep in our heart.

For exmaple, the "hearing" here refers to understanding, not just hearing.

Hebrews 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

So in plain English I read it as:

"Faith comes by truly understanding the truth and truly understanding the truth comes by the Word of God."

It is not enough to just hear with our ears since it is possible to do that and not be healed.

Mark 4:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and [their] sins should be forgiven them.

That's what I meant.

Here is a better translation closer to the Greek:

Rom 10:17 Consequently, faith is out of tidings, yet the tidings through a declaration of Christ." Concordant Literal New Testament

Now faith, we need now faith not yesterday's faith but now faith and it comes by hearing the word of God, and by building yourself up by praying in the Holy Ghost, in jude it speaks of this, man cannot live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God, we need the word every day especially while it is today, God didn't save you to just be concerned about yourself, you need the now faith, for your family, friends, for all the people you come in contact with.
