I think you're right. I simply lumped it in because it resurrected the namesake, and was obviously a modern muscle car. Chrysler said as much. Technically though, the Camaro and Mustang (although some argue over the Yenko) was not a muscle car, but a pony car, and the Charger was more a muscle car.
I suppose one could argue that the Charger brought the Muscle car concept back. To me, THAT IS RETRO, but I get what you're saying about the styling, for sure.
I think most of that was for marketing, there wasn't much on the 06-10 model that really said retro, the 11-14 has more styling cues from the original I think.
What are you going to legally do on the street in an SRT-8 that you can't do in a Hyundai elantra? Same goddamn argument, when it comes down to it.
And it's probably safe to assume that the elantra driver isn't what we would call an automotive enthusiast when compared to someone that would want a Hellcat. Some people can't figure out that there are people out there that see cars as more than a tool to get from A to B.
I get what you're saying. A while back, I rented a GT-R, which was fun to drive, but unless on a track, I'd see no difference between a 2009 and a 2014 (3.8s vs 2.7s respectively).
Same with an SRT-8 vs a Hellcat... I doubt that anyone would really feel much of a difference in power, unless driving it down a 1/4 mile track or doing a top speed run.

I don't see a car as simply a tool to get from A to B. I like "fun" cars as much as the next car enthusiast. I just don't see enough of a difference, aside from outrageous HP ratings, to justify getting a Hellcat instead of an SRT-8. That's just me, though. Maybe some like the idea of having a large, 4-door sedan capable of barreling down a 1/4 mile track at a smidge under 12 seconds?
Personally, if I were in the market for something that fast, I'd pick something that doesn't need 700+ HP, but rather, a better-built 500-ish HP sport car capable of better numbers.
To each his/her own, though.
the Hellcat is overkill for Daily Driving/street use heck a Charger SRT-8 or even just a nicely trimmed Charger R/T would be 98% as fun for 1/3 the price.
I agree which is why I went with the R/T in Road and Track trim with the Super Track Pak. It's still more than enough car but I am ready (and seriously considering) ordering an SRT 392 with all the options that I want. I bought the R/T off the lot and while it's nice and all, black on black is not my first choice color-wise.
The people I know who have the most powerful cars do tend to take them and have fun at the track now and then. Cars like the Hellcat or even SRT-8's are not just for their commute (although they can be used for that purpose).
These days, nearly every "performance" car on the market has far more capability than can be fully explored on the street.

I remember them doing head-to-head comparisons in nearly every magazine with test-numbers from the original is why I held that opinion.

For me, the limit is around 4-4.5 seconds 0-60. Better than that, and I feel like I'm wasting my money for a street driven vehicle. Honestly, I have more fun in the 5-6 second 0-60 range with a car that has a great suspension. I would have readily traded my 370Z for my friend's BRZ, and I did trade my Z06 for my 370Z. The more I learned HOW TO DRIVE, the more I valued driving dynamics.

I garaged my Z06 and drove a Sentra as my daily. Total waste of $1500/mo, if you ask me (note/garage/insurance), but hey, I enjoyed the hell out of it when I DID! drive her! Midlife crisis over by age 30, I'm happy!
