Proud to say I was a customer of Peanut Jim. Sometimes his peanuts may have been a little toasty, but they were hard to turn down.

1932 - "Peanut Jim" Shelton arrives in the "West End" and begins selling his roasted peanuts outside Redland Field. "Peanut Jim" was as much a part of Crosley as were the Reds themselves. Dressed in his stovepipe hat and tails he sold roasted peanuts from his pushcart well into his nineties, having moved to Riverfront Stadium in 1970, along with the Reds.

Unfortunately, in the seventies, he was roughed up by some hoods. He was back a few weeks later ... with some "security".

Looking for more stories about Peanut Jim Shelton. I heard one of the radio broadcasters mention his name this week

I remember Peanut Jim Shelton from Crosley Field, before Riverfront was even built. We enjoyed him there and then at Riverfront. You have to get one of the older broadcasters like Marty Brennaman to bring out some of the older stories.

For a brief second I thought this thread (which I hadn't noticed last time around) was about somebody else. Back in the day there was a teacher at Wyoming High School, with the first name James, who was notorious for being a tough grader. If he thought your work deserved a zero, that's what you were given. For that he was tagged with the nickname Doughnut Jim.

I'm old enough to have seen Reds games at Crosley Field as well as Riverfront, but have no recollection of this Peanut Jim person. My loss.

Definitely is your loss. Peanut Jim and his pushcart were a fixture outside of the ballpark. He always wore his stovepipe hat and tails. He roasted the peanuts right on the cart. After the move to Riverfront he could also be seen outside of some Bengal home games.
