Cincinnati started many good movements: pro baseball, a trained professional fire department, professional city management...and a few things not so positive. Last week a noted university got nailed for a long history of nonstudent 'student athletes', a practice seen elsewhere also. (I've heard that some colleges do a better job at educating Jocks than others, even in Cincinnati.) Phoney students with big muscles and great reflexes undermine the real students and lessen the value of their diplomas. On the other hand, we Americans are fanatics about college sports even if we never finished grade school. Is there an accommodation possible? How do you blend school spirit with the pursuit of knowledge? What if we pioneered an arrangement whereby colleges created something like a 'University of North Carolina Sports Association', affiliated with the school but not requiring anything more than a high school diploma and no current academic demands? Jocks could display their talents and even be paid, while Jocks-With-Brains could also earn their scholarships, to be available to them with perhaps 6 or 8 years to earn a degree.

Setting up some separate sports association is a complete waste of time. Even if it did happen, they'd figure out a way to turn that into a hot mess just like big time college sports are now. Fact is, pretty much nobody cares about this North Carolina scandal. Most of the "outrage" about it is as phony as a 3-dollar bill. Which in a way is understandable - it's nothing compared to something as sick as the Penn State scandal.

I don't entirely buy the notion that muscle bound jocks are devaluing diplomas. I think colleges are devaluing diplomas by offering a bunch of majors that are completely worthless and admitting kids who are either not suited for their particular school, or who are not college material at all.
