Traffic and crime for the most part, and I feel like I'm coming to terms with the fact that I basically have to cut through unless I want to take a huge detour. I don't want to cross too many busy streets and I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb with my gear in sketchy neighborhoods.

The American discovery trail runs thru the city and everything from downtown to the east would be pretty nice as far as being on bike trails, along the river etc. Its even blazed on utilty poles, street signs, etc. Hpe this helps a bit.

I totally agree with wilson about the tracks. walking along the river will be a lot more interesting and no less safe than your proposed route.

enjoy your trip! it sounds like a lot of fun.

assuming you're relying on plastic for most of your funds, i wouldn't stress too too much about the 'bad neighborhoods' in cincinnati. you'll get a lot of questions and curious/interested people. i don't think urban petty criminals are that interested in backpacking gear. i feel like i'd be more worried about isolated rural places.

fwiw, you'll stick out but i do see backpackers downtown maybe once every two weeks during the warmer months. it is unusual but not like you'll be stopping traffic.

If you're worried about traffic and sticking out like a sore thumb, I definitely would NOT take Madison. Oakley and Hyde Park are the types of neighborhoods where they call the police on people who they deem unwelcome. Don't get me wrong...lovely neighborhoods which I would normally send everyone through, but it doesn't seem like the route you want. Following the river is a much better choice.

I go back to my recommendation of the tracks.

There are 10 blocks of Madison Road on the OP's route that she has about a 50% chance of being robbed. As for HP and Oakley, she would have no problem there, everyone is welcome and the police are polite even if called. But I wouldn't walk through Mudville with a backpack and gear unless I was Mad Max or one of the Swamp People.
