Public Transit: a joke.

I hate to say it, but if this is a major requirement, you'll have to check back with us in a few years.

Btw, what other cities are you considering?

I had every intention of being an "urban pioneer" when moving to Cincinnati, then reality quickly setttled in. Public transportation is very inefficient and unreliable here, and even though I road cycle, I find the hills to be too much in Cincinnati. Unless you're into hardcore, heart-bursting cycling, forget about it. I usually end up taking my bike to Columbus or Cleveland. (Not suggesting those cities, just saying)

Unfortunately, Cincinnati is a very car-dependent city and a lot of people are fine and comfortable with that. From my observation, it seems the majority of people who regularly use public transportation here are the ones who have no other choice.

Yes and that's why I chose to live and work in areas that are accessible to public transportation.

While it's not ideal, it is possible to live here without a car.

Not really. You could but it will become very frustrating. The public transporation here is little to non existant. Its a commuter city. If you live/work/hang out in one area and one area only, like downtown, you could pull it off, but as i said it will still be frustrating at times.

My brother who lives in Northside and cycles mainly to his classes at UC and a job downtown hasn't owned a car in over 5 years. He races bikes semi-pro and rides to class./work all year round. An extreme example but it can be done esp. from a relatively central location like Northside.

Its a extreme example all right. Most of us arent semi-pro cyclists. Also, a lot of folks dont live in a central area. Finally, in 4-5 months of the year this trip would be brutally cold.

Well, he's 35 and was a bicycle commuter first.

4 or 5 months? OK Nov-Jan=3 months. And of course there's lots of warm gear for cyclists.

The OP could choose to be central to where they need to be thus not needing a car.

Anything else?

I have to agree that it's pretty ridiculous to live here without a car. Sure, that example works. Someone could move to a central location, and could ride a bike to work/school when it's 10 out...but that is really extreme. Not to mention, how do you move the new desk you need for your apt/house? How do you carry more than a bag or 2 of groceries? This is a hilly ass city. I love to ride my bike but not from Findlay Market to Madisonville carrying fruits/veggies/meats for the week. What if you want to try a new restaurant in a distant neighborhood? Just seems like you would miss out on a hell of a lot without a car.

I'd guess so, Tubby. But a backpack solves a lot of your issues. And I'm not fitting any desk in my car, either.

Yup, I have a handy little backpack I use when biking to carry my mitt, gym clothes, small amt of groceries, etc so that is true. And yeah, I guess I can't fit a desk in my car either, but I had to come up with something.

it is absolutely possible to live in cincinnati without a car. but i suspect most people who try will at least end up with a $750 beater. free street parking is plentiful and there just aren't the hassles of having a car that you experience in new york or even chicago
