I have often wondered this, some cities are overshawdowed (Baltimore) or more remote (Seattle).

What cities do you believe would have more cache if they were located someplace else?

San Jose, if San Jose & Silicon Valley were located a hundred miles more south of where it is now, it would be huge without San Francisco's help.

If El Paso was close to the Texas triangle, it might get more attention. If it was in New Mexico or Arizona, it would get even more attention.

Really? Just curious why, and where? Chicago is the king of it's locale and think more important/prominent because of this. Place it on the East or West coast and it may be more overlooked. Though all this assumes you pick it up and move it and there would be or have been no impact on what it is today...

If it were in Washington, people most definitely would call it the "New York of the West".

But it is NY of the MW, there are more people and a higher density in the MW than the West coast, plus LA is bigger

I am just surprised, Chicago is a city that in my mind has benefitted from it's location

I don't think Chicago is being overshadowed at all, just observing if you put it somewhere else. A city that big would overshadow a region like the PNW. Chicago is the dominant city of the midwest.

Actually, if you moved Chicago anywhere else, it'd lose some of its clout. Its location is as close to perfect as you can get.

If you want a city that'd instantly gain clout by moving somewhere else, it's Philadelphia.

Many mid sized cities in the northeast. They get overshadowed by NYC, Boston, Philly and DC.
And some mid sized cities in the midwest, namely ohio such as Toledo and Akron. They get overshadowed by Cleveland, Cinci and Columbus
