I was responding to a recent thread with the notion that Philadelphia or Boston would have more significance if the exact same city was located in a different geographical location. My reasoning is, they both get lumped with NY or each other often. Chicago, SF or even DC stand alone. If they were more isolated, I believe they both would be appreciated more. Throw Baltimore in the same convo. What major US city could gain alot if it was located in a different part of the country?

If Savannah weren't in Georgia, I'm sure it would be a much larger, more progressive city than it already is. Especially considering the backwards southern politics.

Same with Atlanta. I'm sure it wouldn't be as much of a sprawled out mess it is now. I'm pretty sure MARTA would be comparable to DC's transit.

Imagine if Atlanta was where Jacksonville is on the water!

It would probably look something like Miami.... or Houston, since North Florida is definitely still southern (factoring in Houston's sprawl). Honestly though, who knows. It could be a mix between Houston and Miami?

BTW, I'm not trying to say that just because these cities are in southern territory means they will have unregulated sprawl. It is just more likely considering the corrupt politics and lack of regulation and/or foresight (which can also occur anywhere fwiw).

This is a stupid question, it's like asking would Paris be more important if it was located in Africa, Paris is Paris because of its location otherwise there wouldn't be a Paris, just like NYC is how it is due to its location on an island.

I always thought Houston seemed like "If they put Atlanta where Jacksonville is."

Boston has plenty of significance as is. Philadelphia may be another story as it's in NY's backyard and has suffered a substantial decline over the years (though is now making a return). Anyway it's impossible to imagine these cities in any other part of the country because then they wouldn't be what they are.

Replace Flint, MI with San Francisco and it would become an industrial hub!

Actually, all of the midwest cities would benefit greatly if they were moved to the Pacific or Atlantic coast.

I think some cities would rank lower if they were moved. For instance, I really like Chicago's location on the lake, and I think it'd lack a lot of its visual appeal if it just got dumped in, say, the middle of Illinois or any other state. Another city I think would lose its appeal would be Boston and Seattle. I think Boston benefits greatly from being on the Bay, and Seattle, with its moderate temperature and scenic, mountainous backdrop, wouldn't be the same in another location.
