Agreed...
There is nothing wrong with department stores. Saying they are only for "old ladies" sounds like an argument one would make in middle school. There is a huge variety of shoppers there every time I go in one, and they are fairly good indicators of a city's importance in the shopping world.
I know. I get most of my clothes from department stores. I was at Macy's at NorthPark a couple of week ago. I seen teens, old people, young people, and middle aged people shopping. It was really busy, I had to hurry up and leave lol.
Houston people will dismiss the value of luxury department retail because they got the short end of the stick there. Fact is, Dallas has all that plus more
I said Memorial City Mall was fairly upscale, but Baybrook and Willowbrook are booming. Never really said any were upscale, but than again upscale doesn't equal great shopping.
Dallas Galleria isn't even that upscale; it's about on the level of Memorial City Mall. Also, your wrong with all the upscale stores being concentrated at the Galleria; you have tons of shopping centers scattered around the uptown area that cater to the upper class.
So I went to the Houston Galleria for the first time today as I was in Houston this weekend. I was impressed with the mixture of retailers and feel they were organized nicely. However the majority of that mall does look like it needs a facelift (the newer part is really nice). The skating rink at Galleria Dallas is much nicer than the one in Houston. I didn't like the low ceilings in certain sections of Houston Galleria and the VERY chopped up feeling of the mall (it's not very easy to navigate certain sections for a visitor).
While I think the fact that Atlanta having more shopping centers has its advantages I think the level of options in Houston does put it above Atlanta. Houston has some big name stores there that Atlanta doesn't have.
Dallas does by far have the better shopping options and venues out Georgia and Texas, but Miami of course wins in the retail department over everyone though.

Considering I'm not from Houston nor shop at luxury department stores; it wouldn't make a difference to me. I've never bragged about them before and I wouldn't now.
I just don't believe more upscale shopping equals better malls. Malls cater to all demographics; not just one. Houston offers more than enough upscale shopping. A true shopping paradise goes far beyond Dior or Chanel; it includes the local boutiques and retail scene.

I agree. But there were those referring to these places as old lady stores
