The only person who has "bashed" LA in here is me. And I'm not really an East Coaster (unless living here for a whole whopping 9 months makes me an one).

And it's not just a single region that bashes (or doesn't care for) Los Angeles. Los Angeles is always at the very bottom of every city survey, so more like regions not region.

If you are looking for sophistication and a true city experience-- Los Angeles is an awful choice.

Los Angeles as a city is great at what it does. It's worked it's way to becoming a denser city. It went from a very sprawled city to controlling that.

Today Los Angeles is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, beating out cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, & Washington DC in that regard.

Los Angeles is also deemed as a major fashion hub and capital at that. Entertainment and nightlife options are meant to be top tier here.

Los Angeles as a city offers all the amenities large cities can. Definitely more so than competitors like Boston & Philadelphia.

Economically Los Angeles also wields the second largest economy in the country.

And geographically, Los Angeles has a great setting with natural beauty all around it.

Yeah it doesn't look like New York City, Chicago, & Boston. But not every city needs to look the same way and have that same layout. And it's not even that people can say that it is not dense as the city is pretty dense for itself given it's layout it was a milestone for the city to achieve that overall density.

What exactly about it in particular is it that you don't like about it?

It's a societal cesspool.

And yes, all cities (at least the ones that matter) must look like New York City, Chicago and Boston to an extent in layout.

New York City - Check
London - Check
Paris - Check
Rome - Check
Monaco - Check
Chicago - Check
Tokyo - Check
Hong Kong - Check
Istanbul - Check
Berlin - Check
San Francisco - Check

Los Angeles is the only alleged world city I've been to with a useless layout and a barren wasteland of a downtown or city core.

And too many idiots. 50% of it seems to be poors from Mexico, the rest; snaggletooth dumbasses from Podunk with dreams of becoming Hollywood stars, typical LA rich-poors living a false lifestyles on credit. It was hard to find "yuppies" (as much as I hate that word), even in my safe confines of the Westside.

Regarding LA's "natural beauty". When you actually live in LA, 95% of the city is completely dry, bland or downright ugly/ghetto. And the architecture, or lack thereof....And I'm a city guy, so climbing up a brown/dry canyon doesn't interest me in the least bit.

You cant believe half of that crap do u?

A city does NOT have to be built like NYC or SF to "matter". LA is doing a good job being a megacity. It's cityscape is diverse enough that it can go from suburban sprawl to very dense, and everything in between. Im starting to wonder if NYers are having an inferiority complex.

New York City!

There are SOME things I like/like a lot about Los Angeles(Awesome danny who should change his city data user name back to Omshahi made some very good points about LA) , but I find most of it a bit too sprawly, dumpy and architecturally dumpy, and a bit too overrated and overpriced.

The only areas of LA for the most part I think I like are its outskirts(Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Topanga etc.)

So for me its EASILY New York City over Los Angeles

Definetly Los Angeles. Beaches, Palms, and Mountains and CHEAPER real-estate(as expensive as LA is). Let everyone go to NYC, I'll be part of the misfits who choose LA.

Most people pick LA for the weather so you think it is wrong for someone to pick NY because it is denser which means it is more walkable, you need no car, you do not get fat as easily, and you can walk to everything? What is so wrong with that, or do you not want it to be used as an argument because it does not suit your choice? LA can not give me Brighton Beach I know that.
