I know that both cities have roughly the same population in their downtowns, but it seems like Dallas's numbers have changed over the recent years because the boundaries of downtown have been expanded to include residents in the surrounding areas. I'm not sure if Houston includes nearby Midtown's aproximate 7,000 in the overall downtown population but i do believe Dallas counts nearby Uptown.
Does anyone know or have a relable source on the population of the downtown and how the boundaries are drawn?
I don't think Dallas' Uptown should be counted as part of Downtown proper.
They are two distinct districts currently separated by a below grade freeway until the park deck is complete which will link the two vital areas together on a much larger scale.
I dont think too many people live in downtown of either, but I would guess that downtown Houston has more. Downtown Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio probably have more full time residents than either Downtown Dallas or Houston.
Uptown Dallas and Midtown Houston is a different story.
Dallas has a Bigger population.
All you have to do is drive through Downtown or past it, to realize that Dallas
has overtaken Houston in many ways.
Also, Dallas is not erecting many high-rises for business purposes lately,
but it IS growing in population since they are converting many of the older
buildings into residential buildings.
And contrary to what people might think, it IS affordable to live in Downtown Dallas.
There are mid-rise buildings that have been converted that start as low as 5 and 6 hundred
per month rent or lease.
Buying is another thing. It can get somewhat expensive, but a person can actually buy a flat
for as low as what it costs to buy a cheap house in Plano.
($180,000 t0 $250,000)
When you Google apartments in Downtown, you need to know how and what to look for;
otherwise they will lead you to the Million-Dollar flats in Victory Square (the W hotel)
that can be up to 2.5 million; but those are NEW midrise buildings that are intended for middle-class
to Upper class people.
All the good/affordable rent/lease/buyable properties are all-over downtown, but mostly on the
SouthSide of Downtown (the white buildings on the south side of Main st)
But as for population, some houston lovers may be right about Dallas making Uptown part of the Downtown population. Boo hoo to them; They should include their Uptown too.
If you haven't been to or Seen Dallas since last year, then you need to visit. It is growing yearly,
and Google Earth can't stay up to date.
The figure you're including has 10,000 that are incarcerated. Downtown Houston averages about 1.24 people per unit and only has 2,480 units.
There are consequently 5,000 units in the pipeline, all with finance in check and city incentive money collected ready to build, some already underway, others by January 2015 all known projects in Downtown for residential will be.

It didn't specify if they were incarcerated. So if Downtown Houston has 19,000 residents and 10,000 are incarcerated. I guess that means 9,000 live in Downtown Houston who are not incarcerated and 6,170 people live in Downtown Dallas. Not sure if Downtown Dallas has a jail downtown so that could possibly be reduced too.
Either way Houston has more residents living downtown even when you take out the 10,000 incarcerated.
To be honest this is a cut and dry thread. Just pull the numbers and you get your answer. I see people on here debating which has more based on which looks like it has more or throwing out random percentages based on perceptions.
Google gives us everything we need to know when it comes to demographics. Just type in Downtown Houston and Downtown Dallas demographics and you'll get your answer.
