They are nothing at all alike.
The differences:
- Baltimore is already a large established city, Kansas City is an economic boomtown right now and is growing.
- Baltimore has great mass transit options, Kansas City doesn't have any form of transit rail.
- Culturally they are different.
- One is land trapped, the other has a waterfront.
- One is in the proximity to other major cities, and Kansas City is a bit isolated.
- Among so many other countless differences.
Besides both having only 2 professional sports teams, I can't think of many other or even a few other similarities. Besides the fact they are both cities in which people live in.
First off, they are different, but they are also similar in many ways.
They are about the same size. I know that technically, the MSA of Baltimore is a little bigger, but Baltimore sure doesn't feel bigger. I think some of Baltimore's burbs are more tied to DC than Baltimore. Annapolis (anne Arundel county) is in the Balt MSA for example, but there is far more commuting to DC than Baltimore from Annapolis.
The urban core of Baltimore (the commercial urban core) seems smaller than KC by quite a bit, while the residential portion of urban Baltimore seems larger and is far more dense than urban KCMO.
But....urban kcmo is still quite dense for a midwestern city and is much more dense than its density stats say. While KCMO may have some boom town charateristics of a Denver or Minneapolis, the city also has a more blue collar, working class, rust belt and gritty side from when the city was a major city in the early part of the 1900's.
I like Baltimore, but I think there is actually more to do in KC and I also think that KC is generally a much nicer city with much nicer suburbs. KC seems to offer a better quality of life.
KC is a regional city and a regional tourism destination for millions of people while Baltimore is in the shadow of DC and Philly even with the Inner Harbor.
The sports teams are similar, but I think KC has a much nicer arena as well as some popular minor league sports teams and a major nascar speedway. KC is also building a first class soccer stadium for the MLS Wizards.
KC has two major water amuesment parks, a major theme park, a decent zoo, several very good museums, the amazing union station and is building a 420 million dollar performing arts center that will compete with anything in the world.
I would choose KC in a heartbeat over Baltimore and the Baltimore suburbs as a place to live, but I would choose the greater Baltimore/DC area over KC because the region just offers so much. But when just looking at the cities, I think KC is the better city, but again, I really do like Baltmore and it's location is MUCH better than where KC is.
Those are pretty decent pictures ok KC's skyline. I've always thought for some strange reason most photos don't show how nice KC's skyline is from most views. Baltimore has the edge in culture and probably food as far as diversity but KC has good restaurants too. KC has power and light districe and I'm sure Baltimore has something similar. KC probably has a better economy. Politics, well that depends on your views. I like KC and wouldn't mind living there.
KC's density is less that 2k ppsm?? KC's is big geographically, but small in population. Kinda like VA beach of the midwest. Baltimore is larger by 700-800k.
