I knew CC and Fort Myers would get up there. My grandparents moved there, and then moved back because of how bad the situation got down there (They sold there home for almost 3 times less than when they bought it). Visiting there was nothing like the brochure, though I had a good time in Tampa, Miami, Ft Myers Beach etc. Some parts of Fort Myers was straight GHETTO.

The water situation could hurt them in the long-run with respect to diversifying the economy. Most industries (including tech) are water-hungry...for example, when I was in Albuquerque last July, the newspaper had an article about a hard-fought water rights agreement between Intel and the city. Intel alone uses 3% of ABQ's water.

Is water really such a big deal in those southwestern cities?

Not really. The water resources in the US are huge, in the world top 5.
China has more people than the US, but China's water resources are much smaller (X5 more in the US).
Don't worry for Las Vegas or the other, no problem.

Water resources are huge, but if you're referring to the Great Lakes, Las Vegas wont be getting any of that water. Its strictly reserved for only the Great Lakes states.

Thats where the problem comes in. And thats where theres evident signs for water shortages in the Desert Southwest & Southern California. Even aquifers cant keep at it for too much longer.

But water in the US is a very local issue...the southwest cannot take water from the Great Lakes, etc. As for China, there is a reason why they don't have much urban growth in the arid parts of the country.

Good thing Vegas has easy access to the coast...oh wait. How much would they have to pay water-hungry California to pipe that water in? The city would go bankrupt.
