Will Georgia slip past Michigan to become the 8th largest state in the nation with the 2010 Census count? It's going to be very close. If not for the recession, I'd say Georgia was a shoo-in to take the 8th spot. However, the economic downturn has really slowed in-migration to the Atlanta region during the past year. On the other hand, the same factors may have hastened the exodus from Michigan in the past year as well. It will be interesting to see the final numbers.

2009 ESTIMATES
8. Michigan -- 9,969,727 (-32,759 from 2008)
9. Georgia -- 9,829,211 (+131,373 from 2008)

2010 PREDICTION (assuming the same 2008-09 population increase/decrease)
8. Georgia -- 9,960,584
9. Michigan -- 9,936,968

* If Georgia doesn't edge Michigan with the official 2010 count, it most certainly will move up to the 8th spot by the 2011 estimates.

Trust me. When you count up all the illegals Georgia is over 10 million and we've already had a larger population than Michigan for a while now.

AGREED. What it's going to come down to is how accurate the official count is, which is probably going to be in dispute. Also I am real curious to see how accurate the "estimates" have been over the past decade. I would not be surprised if many states, including Georgia, come in for the count under what the Census has been estimating annually since 2000. For one, the methodology for estimates probably has flaws. And the final returns on the 2010 Census never broke the 90% range so there's going to be a bell curve applied.

A lot of states have many undocumented illegals. It's not something that's unique to Georgia.

True. But I was born and raised in South Georgia and I have lived in Ohio, and have family in Michigan. There is no comparison. My town in South Georgia has in the past 20 years gone from having just a few hispanic's (many illegal) to being like atleast 25 percent hispanic but the census only shows it at 6 % which has to be way too low and that's not that unusual around there. And even the Atlanta Metro has added way more hispanics although not as dramatic as the rest of Georgia.

My folks from Toledo, Columbus and Flint have told me that part atleast of Georgia has way more hispanics than they are used to seeing. I seriously doubt that Michigan's illegal population has exploded over the past few years the way Georgia's has.

When the official 2010 stats emerge I think people are going to be SHOCKED at how diverse Georgia has become in the past 10 years, and not just Hispanics but from all over the world -- particularly Africa and South Asia. Parts of Metro Atlanta look and feel very much like LA, NYC and Miami ethnic-wise. It's going to back up what has been argued about on C-D that people don't want to believe -- Atlanta has become so international.
