If we are talking about most active nightlife, it's Las Vegas. You'll see more people awake and on the streets and in casinos there than in NYC. Despite what many think, Times Square isn't packed with people at all hours of the day.
NYC (Manhattan and bits of Brooklyn specifically) gives you a much greater variety of late-night eateries. There's also a lot more novelty to be found with various types of nightlife (and not just on a scale of sophisticated or not, but a strange lateral diversity) in NYC, and to a certain extent LA, than is found in the other options listed.
NYC could be incredibly underwhelming if you don't have people to take you around, but I think that's the case with nightlife in any city.
Anywhere I can get a good steak at 2 a.m. is cool with me. That would be NYC.
That could be any of the four.
Maybe if someone could give an accurate description of what nightlife in each of the four entails we could rank them. IMO, New York should probably be on top, the rest can fan fall in any order.
When I visited Miami, I was completely blown away by how beautiful, lively, and fun it was. HOWEVVVERRRR, I was underwhelmed by the nightlife. Maybe my expectations were to high, but I went to about 4 different clubs and all of them were pretty much dead.
For one crazy night out or a weekend? I'd go with Miami. Overall night life is quite easily NYC.
There is definatley some truth to this, Vegas in a similar vein but NYC just offers more types of night life and basically excels in all forms
