Eugene > Salem agree
Tuskegee > Hoover had to be reminded what either of these places were, Hoover is a suburb and should not be compared to
Blacksburg > Alexandria absolutely no way in hell and can't really compare to a suburb, espcially one as well known as Alexandria
Amherst > Springfield agree
College Station > Sugar Land agree, but why are we comparing a college town to a suburb?
Ithaca > Utica agree
Syracuse > Rochester agree
Lawrence > Wichita disagree
This was one of the best overall comparison lists, though.
Maybe it's all the press Gainesville has been getting lately with Urban Myer leaving UF, the pastor wanting to burn Korans, Tom Petty, Sister Hazel, and Less than Jake being from there to name a few. Also the fact that even when they suck, the UF football games have almost 90,000 in attendance where as Jacksonville is struggling to fill the seats enough to avoid a TV blackout. I think everyone's right about Gainesville < JAX, but you have to admit that it's probably one of the largest cities that has a small college town literally knocking on it's back door in this popularity contest.
Those are all good points. I guess it depends on your perception, if I was a bigger college football fan or lived in gators country I would probably be a little more cognizant of Gainesville's presence.

yeah, the suburb thing is a little gimicky for this thread. Hoover is more than a suburb though, its an edge city and Tuskegee is well known because it is one of the best historically black colleges.
What are some college towns that are more commonly known household names (because of the college) nationally than other larger towns within the same state??? List the the college towns and the less popular larger cities.
Georgia:
Athens is more commonly known then Columbus, Macon and Augusta.
Alabama:
Tuscaloosa is more known than Huntsville IMO.
Gainesville (Florida Gators) is better known than Jacksonville which is much much larger. Any thoughts??
That would be true, if Jacksonville didn't have the Jaguars.
