Either Charleston has done a poor job selling itself, or I am just ignorant, because I never would have thought it looked like that.

Pennsylvania in general seems to have a lot of steeples.

LOL, Charleston is a pretty popular and well-regarded leisure tourist destination. I'm not saying you're ignorant, but at this point the city's reputation is its best marketable attribute so you don't necessarily see a bunch of commercials about it.

Pittsburgh's steeple's are more visible due to the hilly terrain. You can overlook a neighborhood a see historic steeples in all directions.

Does Charleston have really terrible suburban sprawl or is it pretty centralized?

Another good view of a bunch of steeples would be going south/east on 94 out of downtown. Milwaukee is definitely a good candidate.
I think a lot of these older cities that have a strong presence of older branches of Christianity are like that.
Many mega-churches could pass for medical centers or community colleges if it weren't for the sign out front.

It has more than its fair share of sprawl and as much as it's growing, it seems to be getting worse unfortunately.
