how close is Niagra to Buffalo? from Detroit to windsor it takes maybe 10-15 min depending on how close you live to the brige/tunnel and travel. Is it like that?
I was very excited to go to Cleveland for the MAC Basketball tournament in 2009. Me and a few of my friends packed our bags and made the 3 hour trek to Cleveland. We arrived there on a Thursday about midday. We didnt do much, just got acquainted with our hotel and surroundings. Neat location next to Jacobs field.
We soon left for the Quicken Loans Arena. The place was certainly lively. En route to the game to the game we encountered many Clevelanders who told us the "best spots" to go in Cleveland. Sure enough that night we had the time of our lives. We partied all out night! Friday night was a little dull, wasnt sure why. I asked the bartenders and whomever to direct us to a more lively area. Upon arrival it was much of the same, kind of dead.
After being somewhat disappointed, we woke up Saturday expecting to have a repeat of Thursday. After the game we went to the hotel and got ready to go out. We had a list of places we were told to go, got in the cab and off we went! Every place we went to was DEAD, I mean like a ghost town. We had the cab driver take us to what he described as the college area. We went to a few of the bars there and was so so disappointed.
We figured it was because all the teams in the MAC tournament were eliminated, therefore had no reason to stay in Cleveland. Still though, doesnt anyone in Cleveland go out? I think we spent more time driving around to find activity than anything else.
All was not lost though, the Syracuse Mens basketball game was on and we found a bar that was still open and had more than 10 people in it. We sat down at the bar only to have the bartender ignore us even after gesturing to them that we need the drink. We did finally get served, though. At this time there was just about 5-6 people there...all of the people I went with and they decided to kick us out because of the lack of business at approximately 1am.
Then Sunday, it was the oddest thing. We were going to the Cavs game only to be mobbed by tons of people. On a SUNDAY. We couldnt get service in any bars because it was so busy!
Makes no sense to me. This town only comes alive for sporting events, any other Saturday night I guess people stay home and study or play scrabble.
Cleveland was overwhelming disappointing. Ive been to many other cities, and comparatively speaking, Cleveland ranks the lowest in terms of nightlife.
I have since been to Cleveland on 2 other occasions. Same thing. Cincinnati, which doesnt have great nightlife either, kicks Cleveland's ass.
Ive also been to Detroit. I must say, although Detroit awfully scary at night, I was impressed with their nightlife. Other than me walking to Ford Field at night, I had no problems with this city.
Bars were packed on a Saturday night. Nothing special going on. I was there for the MAC Football championship.
It would be a sin to compare Detroit's nightlife to that of Clevelands.
I live in Buffalo and maybe I expected too much from Cleveland because of Buffalo's nightlife (Chippewa st, Allen st, Elmwood av). I guess it helps Buffalo that they have specially zoned streets for bars, which creates quite a cluster of bars and clubs.
Pittsburgh, which is not mentioned, had some pretty decent nightlife too. We went down their bar street (Carson). There were a tonnnnn of pubs. We did find 1 club which was very nice. But that street was littered with shady people just lurking on the corners.
Also, forget about getting hailing a cab in Pittsburgh. ITS IMPOSSIBLE, not exaggerating. I had to ask one of the many police officers on the street what was up with that. He told me that they dont get paid by picking people up or something to that effect (I had a few beers mind you). He said they will just drive up and down the street and some will run errands.
We offered a cab driver 120 dollars to take us back to our hotel. 120 dollars. Our cab fee on the way there was 17 total. The cabbie refused. After walking down Carson for 25 minutes I could tell we were in a very bad area as the bars were non existent. I even had a guy try to fight me because I looked at him the wrong way and when he confronted me 7-8 of his homies/friends circled around me and my two other friends....luckily we talked our way out of a senseless as whooping.
Regardless of that matter, we did finally hail a cab. We had to lie to him and tell him our hotel was just a few blocks away. He was so pissed when he started driving and we revealed where the hotel actually was. (Only 5 miles away)
Nightlife definitely goes to Buffalo. I cant say the same for their economy, though.
Although New York State is still proceeding with their billion dollar plan in 2020 for the University at Buffalo and the city of Buffalo. Buffalo is going to see a ton of skilled jobs created in the medical sector. Buffalo already known for their medicine (Roswell Cancer Institute), will expand that field in hopes to make it the silicon valley of medicine.

^don -- every city has dull parts and others that are more exciting. Cleveland certainly has some very hopping nightlight spots. where you go depends on what you're looking for. that said, what neighborhoods did you go to? sounds like you were not given very good advice. as for jumping in a cab and asking, he'd likely take you a place for which he could get a good fare, when really the good spot may have been just a few blocks away....
as for this topic, i can't speak to nightlife in Buffalo, but in general, I'd give it to Cleveland overall among these three cities. Detroit has some interesting parts, but a lot of downward pressure still. CLE, on the other hand is on the way up, with some $7b in investment in the central city right now. There's a lot going on and you can't even find an apt. to rent downtown anymore. new hotels have just opened and a few others in the works. also a new office tower going up in the Flats---i heard its the ONLY new office construction to begin in the US in 2011 (given the economy).

our downtown nightlife is really underrated IMO. Glad you enjoyed yourself. I think a lot of the reason Detroit's nightlife gets overlooked is because it is very underground
Detroit is also seeing a lot of investment in our greater downtown area (which consist of a collection of neighborhoods) and downtown residential space is very limited at this point
I can't speak on Buffalo but
architecture: Detroit
downtown: Cleveland maybe?
brighter future: All are on the up but Detroit is the largest and most important out of the 3
nightlife: depends on what you like, Detroit probably has the most clubs and is probably the most diverse, not to mention the casinos (don't know if the other 2 has any), as far as hip hop partying, Detroit hands down
economy: Buffalo from what I hear. 1,000 jobs a month is pretty damn impressive.
Detroit was a lot better than I expected when I visited last summer. It's paradise compared to Buffalo.
Buffalo is the worst major city in the U.S. It's a third-world city that is an embarrassment to any first-world nation. Want Buffalo in a nutshell? Take Detroit's economy... Cleveland's sports teams... NYC's unfriendliness... Chicago's political corruption... Fresno's influence in its own state... Fargo's weather... LA's pollution... Boston's drivers... Baltimore's dilapidated neighborhoods... St. Louis's crime... Pittsburgh's population decline... San Francisco's taxes and regulations... and Seattle's stuck-up women.
