I know NYC, LA and CHI are the 3 largest cities in the country, but why is CHI constantly compared to the larger 2, when actually CHI and it's metro are much closer in population to the MSAs and CSAs that follow it like Dallas, Wash, Philly, etc.

Because New York and Chicago are more like each other than Dallas Wash and Philly. It's not even close to LA which is one giant suburb with a handful of skyscrapers

It's not really Chicagoland vs. Greater New York. It's Chicagoland and Greater New York vs. anywhere else. And C/GNY wins every time.

I dont lump those two together as much. L.A. has bit more influence and noone outside city data really seems to care its a giant suburb. If they ever figure out their downtown needs work, L.A. would begin to eclipse Chicago in most ways other than C.O.L. They just sit and laugh at Midwest weather while the Midwest laughs at their supposed fakeness. Chicago is a great town but its still the population/size of Brooklyn, a burrough of NY. Chicagiland itself is too suburby. In many ways I prefer Chicagos city..it has alleys, more compact, slightly more clean, cheaper, the beaches are closer. Even though they never really use the water much other than boating or wind surfing. If I had the $ its hard to top NYC. The energy of the people blows Chicago off the map. CHICAGO has a big insecurity for whatever reason, and therefore a false ego. Lots of hickish people playing big city while the outer 2/3 of Chicago rots and the suburbs sprawl wildly.? NYers ain't quite as friendly but they ain't the rude pricks Chicago portrays either. Based on all your criteria, I give NY the advantage in every category except rent cost and sports. Food is a tie but NY is more cutting edge with international fare, and skyline is a wash because Chicago's is pretty and balanced and NY is massive and nostalgic..art decco towers built by real men, lady liberty, Times Square, central park, Brooklyn bridge, park Ave., hells kitchen,

Maybe I'm missing something, but I have no idea what you mean by this in relation to the title of the thread or the first post. Can you clarify?
