This seems like a good apples to Oranges comparisons. Both cities have some similarities but also are drastically different. I have some experience with both cities and I haven't seen this comparison. I'm wondering which is the best overall. Here's some criteria to consider.
1. Downtown
2. Walkability
3. Architecture
4. Economy
5. Climate
6. Scenery
7. Bars/Resturaunts
8. Suburbs
9. Transportation (Car and Public)
10. Recreational Activities
11. Education
12. Where would you rather live?
Baltimore takes walkability, architecture, and transportation outright. Nashville gets the nod for economy and possibly the edge for education if we're only talking about higher education. The rest are somewhat subjective. I'd rather live in Baltimore since I prefer its location.
Two totally different cities. Baltimore with everything except scenery. Nashville scenery is stunning to me. I prefer living in a urban neighborhood type city. I'm a midwesterner with a love for east coast cities.
Baltimore wins this one. Nashville wins on lower crime, weather, and a better economy (although Baltimore MSA is quite wealthy). But Baltimore wins on everything else.
I prefer Baltimore. Both are fairly desirable for me but Baltimore has a more authentic urban fabric and the better location.
