How would you tier or place state capitals based off importance? Please show your methods to rank them with rankings, GDP, population, key industries, schools, any else.

In my tier Boston and Atlanta are tops, the next tier has Denver, Phoenix, and Sacramento.

I would definitely agree that Atlanta and Boston are in the top tier, the others are getting there though.

I agree but both appear to be a level below Denver, Phoenix, and Sacramento. It makes sense though, Phoenix is 4 million, Denver 2.5 million, and Sacramento 2.4 million. Austin is getting there awfully fast though. Raleigh with the research triangle are another strong set also.

Atlanta MSA is the largest of any capital city in the country (though admittedly the Boston CSA is bigger). It also has the BIGGEST SKYLINE of any state capital, with the Bank of America Plaza being not only the TALLEST building in any state capital, but also the 8TH TALLEST building in the country and TALLEST BUILDING in the WESTERN HEMPISPHERE outside Chicago and NYC.

Just sayin'.

It could be argued that Atlanta's standing as a top location of corporate HQs, media companies and world's transportation hub actually diminishes its role as a state capital. While true it is the place where Georgia government is based, the staus of "capital" actually has little meaning to the city overall. Savannah or Macon could just as easily be the state capital and I don't think Atlanta's status would be affected one bit.

If you're gonna include Providence then you need Columbus and Raleigh, possibly Nashville and Indianapolis too.

If you go by CSA Annapolis resides in the largest the DC/Baltimore CSA (scratch that actually Trenton is part of the largest though the census is moving Mercer county back to Philly in 2012)

Albany NY is a CSA of 1.2 million yet it seems small in the NE but comparable to others that get more mention even Harrisburg PA is part of a CSA of 1.2 Million as now York PA is combined
