In my travels throughout that region, it is beyond obvious that Miami is looked at as their version of New York - for everything. For the Southeast - hardly a blip on the radar.
And that's basically a function of geography. You can't look at Miami and say, "Oh, it's in the Southeast" when Miami is geographically closer to several Caribbean nations than Southeastern cities. Nor is it anywhere close to centered in the Southeast like Atlanta is. As far as the Southeastern U.S. goes, Miami's regional influence as a large metro area is basically relegated to Florida. It wouldn't make much sense to concentrate Southeastern regional corporate and government offices in Miami when it's not easily accessible to a huge chunk of the region. That's why Atlanta excels in this category and not Miami. But I suspect people really know all of this but are just purposefully being antagonistic.

I continue to see many posters on this site bring the status of their city from GWC into question when they have something to prove, "its a alpha city" etc etc and I believe those are 9-5 average joes making family level income in middle class suburbia, the kings and queens of cookie cutter lifestyle. Not to sound elitist but this agency has time and time again been proven to be managed by imbeciles. Philly from gamma to alpha - in 2 years? Chicago above LA? Atlanta and Miami in the same tier as Boston? Houston below Atlanta and Miami? SF and DC in the same tier as LA?

Imbeciles.
I think this post sums it up the best

I always lagh when someone tries to use GaWC to back their argument up.

Talking about power in the South I agree and even in the US I can agree. But Miami is more of an international hub of business

The list seems to be pretty on par. Cleveland's increased ranking is interesting. Everyone who is subjectively saying this list isn't accurate..feel free to insert your own methodology as it pertains to why you disagree..

well Honestly there are several things wrong.

Current GaWC nonsense:

Alpha++ : New York
Alpha+: Chicago
Alpha: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington
Alpha-: Miami, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia

My Changes in Red:
Alpha++ : New York
Alpha+: Chicago, Los Angeles,
Alpha: San Francisco, Washington, Boston
Alpha-: Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia

I think the only thing they got right was moving Philly to an Alpha.

The bold is what I had in my head, I didn't notice Houston wasn't alpha until my second look, I saw that Washington, San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, and Philly were all move up to Alpha, given that these are Houston peers I assumed it was there. So I don't understand that. You know what this reminds me of,

Every one here.............. (me thinking they got it right this time)

Something doesn't feel right....... (posters critical at GaWC)

............... KEVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Houston is missing from it's peers)

Why would you move Boston up to the higher tier?

houston may Deserve to be higher than Miami, Houston has the 2nd largest port in the Country, and a huge gas/oil provider.
