SF is definitely NOT a top 5 US city. I'd replace that with Boston, or Houston, or Dallas, or even Phoenix, AZ before I'd consider SF a top city for any reason.

Hell, I consider San Diego more important than SF in California, considering that SD has a larger population and is in Southern California.

Looking at these maps really brings into focus the so called "fly over country"
the middle of the country seems pretty disconnected.

If you're going only by population, then yes.

However, SF is the focal point for much of what goes on in the Bay Area and it's much better known internationally and domestically than any of the cities you've listed save for maybe Boston (and that would be domestically).

You might be falling into the trap of seeing the legal boundaries of a city and then saying that's all there is to it (sad, because that definitely doesn't serve Philly too well as its smaller legal limits means that Houston is the far greater city while Phoenix is about the same and San Antonio and Phoenix aren't far behind).
