I once read the St. Louis city limits extended 19 miles along the river?

Well if it extends 10 miles north and 11 miles south, thats 21 miles N-S so it may not be directly on the river so 19 miles are about right.

19 miles however you view it is a very long way! There isn't one part of Fresno that long or wide and it's 104 square miles. That's why I don't care for square mileage when measuring cities.

it looks like the the area of the entire airport is about 4.2 square miles... then again i did the outline of the the terminals themselves and it equaled only about 1.7 square miles, so no idea what the 3.6 miles are.

This tool has been reliable in the past so no idea what's up here.

for the record though I thought a fair amount of the airport was located in delco.
Thanks H'town and Phillies 2011. As I re-read my original link, it's clear the terminals are situated on 3.6 square miles.

As to its location, based on what I read, the international terminal and western edge are in Delaware County. The bulk of the airport (other terminals, most for the runways, garages, surface lots, etc.) are in within the city limits.

I'd say my original assessment of Philly's land area outside of the airport and Fairmont Park remains close to 125 square miles, give or take a little.

Chicago's Midway is 8 blocks by 8 blocks, so it's exactly 1 square mile except for a small area where they pushed the ticketing area across the street and built a skybridge.

Pretty small area for 18,000,000 passengers a year.

In the past 20 years, Mpls/St Paul airport gobbled up 2 entire neighborhoods! Completely leveled them, now they are just covered with grass. You'd never know that 100s of people used to live there until the 1990s.

The City of Los Angeles has some funny looking city limits.

From ONE end to the other...
N Mason Ave & W Vía Urbino, Los Angeles, CA 91326 to S Pacific Ave & Bluff Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90731 - Google Maps

55.2 miles from one EXTREME extremity to the other(I used Mason and Via Urbino in far north Porter Ranch to Pacific and Bluff in San Pedro)

Oh wow. That must be the longest city limit drive end to end in the lower 48.

In Houston I did the Clear Lake part of the City (the most southerly city limits- its on Galveston Bay) to the Kingwood area (the most northerly part of the city) and I got 38 miles (including zig zags).

bare in mind there is a huge chunk of land, (maybe abot 12 miles) inbetween the northern part of the main Houston area and the Kingwood part of the city limits.

here is a map of the city limits:

I see LA has a similar disconnect:

Cleveland is about 16 miles east-west and 8 miles north-south, furthest points. I think average is about 14 miles east-west and 6 miles north-south.

Detroit at most is just under 20 miles east-west and 18 miles north -south.

The single road with the longest distance (Warren avenue) within the city is about 17 miles. It would be 19, but 2 miles of the road pass into a bordering suburb. The road with the shortest distance (a section of Outer Drive) is a 1/2 mile.

There's a ring road (Outer Drive) that's 23 miles long, but it's not continuous and shares other road names in certain sections.

Trivia of the day!
