LA has a better music scene. Food is a wash because Houston is an excellent dining city. Nightlife depends on what you like. The LA scene will be a lot more douchebaggy than Houston.
As a musician myself, I can tell you that Houston's music scene is terrible. People here like Mexican music, country, ghetto music, and top 40. Playing out you need to get used to empty clubs, gigs with no pay, and lack of overall interest.
Houston dining is great for Tex-Mex, chains, and upscale. There are some pretty good ethnic places if you are willing to get out and explore. Everybody in Houston claims they do, but they really don't. Houston's dining scene will lack the quirky and iconic places you will find in LA.
It's called hip hop and r&b music. Not ghetto music.

Oh but Spade, haven't you forgot, "ghetto" is the new catchall term for any and everything that has to do with black people nowadays? It's the new "N-word" in public circles. You gotta keep up with these things!
Ok, well Houston doesn't have as many musicians as LA - but are you all telling me a city as diverse and large as Houston don't have musicians playing a myriad of styles all around the city?
I know Houston is an business city, but it's hard to believe the music scene is just DEAD in a city that size.
I don't need to be in a city with 10,000 great musicians. Hell, 1000 would do. I really just need to be able to get out and hear music.
I disagree about Houston's dining being on the Level with LA. Now granted, Houston may have as many or even more upscale restaurants as LA. But what makes the dining so great in LA are the tiny little place in say Koreatown, Chinatown, East LA, little Tokyo, Thai Town, Hollywood and Venice where the food is cheap and amazing. Houston cant compare with that diversity or atmosphere. Not to say the food in LA is flat out better, but there is more to offer here.
Believe me the food in Houston is better than in LA, plus Houston is close to Louisiana
Steak, BBQ, Southern Food you're 100% correct. But for the ethnic food and it's variety, I must disagree. And at the risk of starting a flame war, LA's mexican food is way better.

This is when you lost all credibility.
