chicgo was improving, this is just a year where they get a burst in crime. it happens to all cities actually. i remember nyc had 471 murders in 09, and in 2010 it jumped to 536.

for all we know next year chicago could hit 400 murders which would be the best improvement in this decade ?

Like usual you're using data that is not 100 percent accurate.

Those news releases use preliminary information & they don't even include all offenses.

i hear Houston has a higher murder rate then Chicago...is that true?

From the 1970's until 2007 it was Dallas. In 2007 Dallas started following what NYC, LA, & Chicago Do - re-classifying
everything they could and making it hard to get in touch with detectives, if it was even assigned to one in the first place.

And no Chicago's murder rate is around 16 per 100,000 Houston is around 12

Well Chicago has been trending down for awhile now - this year is just a big pop that actually started around the middle of October last year. Gang leaders taken down and arrested, gangs factioned off into smaller gangs full of young kids with no "leadership". Now they all decide to go after each other in certain west/south side neighborhoods, normally overnight. Around 80% of shootings are gang related

Murders were up 66% earlier in the year, and now they're up around 25%. Of course these jumps in murders (normally it's all revenge shootings between gangs) don't follow a strict calandar year, it's normally split over multiple years. Last year started off very very quiet, and then things got very active late last fall. So this year the year-over-year stats are going to be huge at the beginning of the year, and now probably come down a bit.

murders:
1992: 943
1995: 828
1998: 704
2001: 667
2003: 601
2006: 471
2011: 433

This year will probably be around 520 or so. Hopefully it gets better then. It's already clamed down from the crazy few months earlier in the year.

It's crazy to think Washington D.C. had about 50% of the homicide count of Chicago in the 90's with less than 25% of the population. Talk about a Cinderella story. Wow..... One thing is for sure, you can never tell the future. Who would have thought a city like DC would have only 69 murders to date in October. All the cities in America are changing and we all have a very bright future.

The trend in dc is amazing. The real reason cities are changing is because of more tough law enforcement, and the drug trade not being as strong as it is now.

You think dc will hit 100 this year? I think dc is at 71 right now I think it will hit 99 to 101 murders.

Law enforcement is not getting tougher, if anything it's become more hands off & PC with major focus on numbers & not crimes.

Chicago's finally started slowing down the past 6 weeks or so, which were on pace with last year's levels (lowest in decades).

The big pop go going in October of last year, and lasted until mid summer of this year. So far we're 1/3 the way through October and have had 6 murders. October of last year had just under 50 murders.

Overall crime down 9% from last year and 14% from two years ago. Looks strange to see everything else green on the reports (crime going down) between 1% up to 14% for burglary - and then have just shootings and murders spiking like that. Damn gangs are pathetic.

Chicago matched last year's total. There's still 2 more months to go.
