Definately California. There really is no comparison imo. And for big city living which I prefer, Charlotte just doesn't do it. California for me.

I would pick North Carolina over Callifornia many times over. Im not saying there is anything wrong with California, if it floats your boat go for it.
To me the South is home, it always has been, always will be.

Lots of people move here from CA - lower taxes, home prices, great food, sports, southern hospitality, outdoor activities, beaches, mountains. There is a difference between the metropolitan areas and smaller towns. Lots of transplants in Charlotte, Triad and Triangle, but you can still get shrimp and grits. YUMM. These areas are open to new ideas, but have still maintained that Southern Soul!!

North Carolina. Higher quality of living, way less problems. Californians are termites that eat in to the integrity of the wood.

Definitely NC. There really is no comparison, to quote you. Give me the South any time.

Give me east coast any day of the week. Not that I begrudge folks who prefer California. I'll help you pack! More BBQ for me.

If money was not an issue and I could afford a nice house in any town in the state -- California. In the real world -- North Carolina. The lifestyle that comes with a $300k home in Asheville, NC beats out the lifestyle that comes with a $300k home anywhere in California.

I spent 3 months in Charlotte back when NationsBank bought SF-based Bank of America. Its a nice city with friendly people and Im sure people like living there.

I personally prefer San Francisco, thus California.

The main reasons are
1. world class multicultural and ethic diversity
2. A downtown with lots of GOOD amenities, day and night.
3. The weather is just exquisite. The Bay Area's weather is beyond ideal.
4. Natural Beauty/Ocean/ Mountains-Hills/San Francisco Bay/ Coast/ Napa Valley/ Tahoe/ Yosemite etc.
5. Food Scene in San Francisco and environs is 5-star, even on a budget you can eat well.
6. This place attracts really bright and talented people-they must be on to something.
7. Always something to do, Always something going on.
8. Locals are very cosmopolitan
and so on...
