I have been to both but they felt about the same to me. Maybe a slight edge for Minneapolis-Saint Paul.

The Twin Cities feel very American (for obvious reasons) maybe a little Canadian Prairies city feel to it. Doesn't feel Asian at all to me.

Eat Street, Frogtown ("Little Mekong"), large stretches of Central Avenue, and large swaths of North Minneapolis and the Greater East Side of St. Paul feel pretty Asian (Hmong, Karen, Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian, and Indian). According to census data, about 7% of the city of Portland is Asian-American. That compares to about 6% of Minneapolis and about 13% of St. Paul. So, it looks like statistically, the two areas are pretty close to each other...

I haven't been to Portland to really get a good feel for it, so I'm going to refrain from voting one way or the other....

If it was St Paul vs Portland I would say St Paul, Twin Cities vs Portland is a wash though.

I'd say Portland, only because Asians seemed to be the only immigrants or minorities visible in Portland whereas Minneapolis/St. Paul seemed to have a larger variety of immigrants and minorities.

Ok, maybe should compare Minneapolis and Saint Paul separetly to Portland:

So,
How does Minneapolis compare to Portland in terms of which one "feels" more Asian?
How does Saint Paul compare to Portland in terms of which one "feels" more Asian?

Of the three cities in question, Saint Paul feels the most Asian. Minneapolis and Portland are a wash.

Do you think Asians might become the majority in Saint Paul some day, based on the way things are going currently?

no

if you look at 1990-2000 the asian population of st. paul made a large jump from 7% - 12%

from 2000-2010 the jump was from 12% to 15% - while still solid growth, when you factor that the national growth for Asians was 43% between 2000 and 2010 you see that this 20% change in St. Paul isn't ahead of the curve by any stretch

Ramsey County (incl. St. Paul) has the youngest asian population in the region by a large margin (23.5 years to 28 years)

Ramsey County also has about 1/3 of the regions asian population

The median age for all residents in Ramsey County is 34.6

The asian population in the region in real #s breaks out as follows:
  • Burmese - 3,277
  • Japanaese - 5,962
  • Cambodian - 7,168
  • Laotian - 8,222
  • Filipino - 11,189
  • Korean - 15,710
  • Vietnamese - 22,746
  • Chinese - 23,543
  • Indian - 33,126
  • Hmong - 63,290
As you can see the Hmong population really drives the twin cities asian population and the largest Hmong population is in St. Paul (46% of the regions Hmong population)

While the Hmong population is spread out to a degree there is also a strong pockt extending from northern mpls, through brooklyn center and into brooklyn park

Here is a good article from 2011 from the star trib that speaks a little bit to the Hmong population moving from St. Paul to the suburbs

Hmong follow earlier immigrants to the suburbs | StarTribune.com

It's basically a refuge population that is maturing - the dynamics are shifting ..... when the currently young St. Paul asian population ages you'll see some suburban migration as well as new populations moving into St. Paul ........ it's at the point where it will cycle and level a bit
