Well, the northeast and southeast are kind of similar in spite of their differences. The west, on the other hand, is almost like a different country. I think it tests people's comfort zone more to move out west from the northeast. Still, a lot of people are drawn by the milder weather and natural scenery.
I am pretty speculative about the Sunbelt getting lots of Northeast movers too. Places like Phoenix has been known as a hot destination for midwesterners and northeasterns for a while. New Mexico is also starting to pick up. Back when it was still wide open and cheaper, northeasterners did move to SoCal and norcal, but now it is just as expensive. Jim McMahon the punky QB and his parents are an example of this. I dont think people really vacation to the dixie heartland too much. It is not known as a tourist destination. Only south florida is a frequented spot for northeasterners.
I was thinking the same thing. Charlotte to Boston is a shorter drive than Denver to LA. When you start talking about other Northeast cities such as NYC and Philly; those places are extremely short drives to the likes of Raleigh/Durham. As for the midwest, cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis etc are relatively close to states like VA, Tenn, and NC. In most cases, people drive as far south as a tank (or two) of gas will take them.
umm it's much closer, nyc to charlotte is 650 miles (A finance relocation for instance), nyc just to chicago is 800, nyc to denver is 1800..., nyc to sf is 3000 miles.
650 mile drive can be done in a day fairly easy for holidays/emergencies.

Oh my God, we agree about something!
The distance from Raleigh to Philly is about the same distance as Raleigh to Atlanta. Raleigh is closer to Toronto than to Miami. Raleigh is closer to New York City than to Orlando.
Charlotte is closer to Cleveland than to Orlando. Charlotte is closer to New York City than to New Orleans.
1. Closer (For example, Midwesterners tend to move to the west areas of Florida, like St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples, while Northeasterners tend to locate in the eastern areas, like Jax, Orlando, Miami, Pt. St. Lucie, WPM and Ft. Lauderdale). Reason? I-95 connects the Northeast directly to the eastern coast of FL, while I-75 connects the Midwest with the west coast of FL.
2. Florida has a climate much closer to tropics than California. Even some people from the west end up in FL for this particular reason. California offers a mediterranean climate, which is nothing but temperate with a little bit of humidity- but it is still temperate. They say you can't swim in the beaches in CA without a special suit because the water is way too cold.
Because they can go the south, exert half the effort, rule the place, and buy up property for the price of a parking spot where they came from.
