Looking from the outside, I would of thought that those two and High Point would be working together for the benefit of region as a whole.
Well High Point really doesn't have much of a dog in the fight being the smallest principal city of the area. But if cities and suburbs can't get along in many metro areas throughout the country, why do you think two similarly-sized principal cities would?

And even that should be in question. I think this state would be better served if the state capital was in Birmingham.

Honestly, the capital would probably fit best in either Huntsville, Tuscaloosa or Auburn. A place where the population is young, educated and more politically centered.
As far as rivalries go, I can't believe someone even mentioned Birmingham vs. Montgomery. That person clearly hasn't been to either city or perhaps even the state of Alabama before!
Seems as though every other mid-sized city in Alabama (Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery) are trying to catch up to Birmingham.
In Georgia, it's Augusta, Savannah, Columbus and Macon "battling" with each other for 2nd place below Atlanta.
South Carolina, Greenville vs. Columbia vs. Charleston.

Huntsville was the state capital from 1819-1820. Tuscaloosa from 1826-1846 and Montgomery 1847-current.
It would of been better if would of stayed in either Huntsville or Tuscaloosa.
Montgomery was probably a great choice in the 1800's, but in the 21st century not so much.
I lived in Alabama for several years. It has been a long time, but I still keep up with the state and have family there.
My impression has always been that Birmingham is far and away the "top dog" in the state, even though it has a lot of problems (economically and historically/culturally. When I was there I felt like Montgomery and Mobile fought for the #2 spot with Huntsville a little further back. But IMO Huntsville has the best future and is now at least even with Montgomery and Mobile (possibly already even a little ahead of those two). Huntsville would have to do a lot of growing over many more decades to challenge Birmingham though.
Montgomery certainly has its cons, but tell me your reasons as to why the city isn't a good fit as capital of Alabama?
Montgomery to me basically represents what wrong with Alabama today, little to no population/economic growth.
Montgomery isnt a mecca for any other industry other than state government.
Montgomery like Jackson, MS is like an overgrown town in the poorest region in the state.
The Birmingham metro has a 1/4 of the state population and most of this state's GDP is coming from the metro. What does Montgomery bring to the table??
