Cite 5 US cities that are the most politically influential in modern US history, lets start from the FDR term to today. Politicians, pres, US house reps, senates, nominees, famous political advisers, speaker of the house, etc etc.
I would say San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City, and most recently Portland.
Seattle is a metro of 3 million. Portland is 2 million. Then the others up there have above 5 million or more and have existed for centeries powering america's economy. Seattle and Portland are new cities for the most part. Seriously economics wise, Dallas is more important then seattle and so is boston, Chicago, Philly, Atlanta and Houston. Portland is about on the same scale and tier as st.louis in economic importance. Seattle is on the tier of san diego, denver, miami and detroit.
I'll give an honorable mention to Atlanta, since it's given us high profile politicians from both sides of the spectrum. You have liberal civil rights icons like John Lewis and and Andrew Young as well as very conservative ones like Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain. Oh and I forgot about Cynthia McKinney who put crazy on the map.
I'm surprised Boston made so many lists. Boston doesn't strike me as that influential politically speaking.
