Urban culture isn't just limited to music and clothing... it includes the actual atmosphere of the cities, how people talk, how visible the culture is outside of the cities, how much they influence their surrounding areas, etc. Also, it doesn't just mean hip hop culture... Jazz was a largely urban genre, as was Soul. Urban culture also isn't solely constrained to urban black culture (although most people seem to think it is)...

The reason why I put the bay area instead of san francisco is because SF isn't the only influential city in its immediate area... in terms of urban culture Oakland is just as if not more influential than SF.

nyc, this would be more interesting if we took say.... nyc/philly/sf/chicago/dc etc out of this as they all have contributed a lot, and did some smaller cities like say ...new orleans, cleveland, st louis

NYC, but anytime you make a thread in this category, NYC will always win. So this thread has become useless right upon it's start.

And I agree with grapico, that would've been better.

Ask the mods to close this thread and redo it with check boxes instead of radio boxes so we can pick multiple places.

And then I don't know what you consider urban culture really? You say soul and jazz but what about classic rock, techno, dance? Not exactly going to a lot of raves out in the burbs or rural america. Is fashion only high fashion like Prada? What about all the other fashion styles out there? I really don't follow this question much.

Great post. Memphis too, as far as blues and the unique niche of Southern urbanism.

ESPN? Who knew. ABC? Thats right. This list must be old - Marvel Comics? You betcha! Miramax? Check. Pixar? Was there really a doubt! Touchstone? Just another dot on the wall. Lets not forget their own microcosm in the Universe known as Celebration, which has become the example for New Urbanism in the world.

Say what you will about the company but any place that can produce Walt Disney World, Pixar, ABC, ESPN, and Marvel is doing something right and definitely has an influential say on all culture.

P.S. Before people start flaming me, I'm NOT saying Orlando is the most influential. I don't think any one city can be the most influential in fact.

Why would it be that? Urban culture does not equal best downtown.
