Nashville added Maury County (Columbia) to the MSA, which makes sense, and I was expecting. We also added Bedford County (Shelbyville) and Marshall County (Lewisburg) to the CSA, which is a little surprising, but not shocking. We also added Lawrence County (Lawrenceburg), which is out of left field to me (it's main interaction is with Maury County/Columbia).
Our CSA now stretches from Kentucky to Alabama. Cue the people bashing us for having a bloated MSA/CSA with low population density.
I added up the new Boston, Bay Area, Miami, and Philadelphia above and this post will be the four (5 million plus) towns I've lived in of Chicago, Houston, Dallas, and Washington DC.

Houston moves a spot right behind Miami (lost the spot by 10,000 people) as 10th largest CSA. Miami went from not having one to having one and jumping solidly into the top 10 for like 2 months or so till it passes Miami up again. Boston also moves down a spot from 5th largest CSA to 6th and probably will lose that spot to Dallas by the end of the decade.
I subtracted the areas of Culpepper and Bonham (for Dallas) and all other areas removed and these are current populations as of 2011 estimates under these definitions. Geeeeeeeez, we sprawled ALL the way into Pennsylvania and Hagerstown with these definitions. God.
I think the key player to the merger was Warren County, NJ(which is already in North Jersey)

But you do see the ridiculousness of a mountainous suburban county(Warren Nj) with a population of 100 K and a pop.density of 300 ppsq mi being the link between NYC and a pretty significant population center in Allentown,Emmaus, Bethlehem? Cities who have historically had very minimal if any interaction with NYC.
In all fairness Allentown has always had their own identity and the bond between it and Philadelphia probably doesnt justify a CMSA partnership there either. But Allentowns bond with Philadelphia is 1,000 to the second 32nd degree stronger than its bond with NYC. Its 25 miles from Allentown to Landsdale(Philly) . Its close to 100 miles from Emmaus to Manhattan.
Don't worry, you'll accept it soon enough. Maybe the Bay Area's high work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit will rub off on the place, becoming a beacon of hope in the much maligned Central Valley.
Notice they combined Merced and Modesto into a CSA? That was a surprise to me, considering that the traffic going between Merced and Modesto is MUCH much less than the traffic between Modesto and Stockton. If any places should've combined, it should've been Modesto and Stockton. Oh well.
And people say Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston sprawls? Look at some of these CSAs.
Washington DC/Baltimore officially win the sprawl contest now. Hagerstown and into Pennsylvania?
ROFLMFAO.
