I still don't see how Atlanta has 300,000 people less than Charlotte even though Atlanta is an obviously larger city.

Part of the reason is because the city of Atlanta, at 132 sq miles, takes up less than half of the square mileage that the city of Charlotte does at 298 sq miles.

Probably because Atlanta's metro is twice the size of Charlotte's.

Charlotte has more land area I believe and Atlanta isn't dense enough in the city limits to compete with Charlotte's population. This is why populations are usually measured by MSA and not city limits. Because city limits are just man made boundaries and doesn't really mean much these days except for political reasons. Jacksonville is larger than Miami going by city limit population but which city would feels larger? seems larger? ect.

That has nothing to do with municipal population though. The city of Charlotte is also more populous than the city of Miami, DC, Boston, Seattle, etc.

I know, I only referenced MSA population because of the "when Atlanta is obviously the larger city" part of his/her sentence.

That may be so, But when you drive around the city of Atlanta it seems bigger, and to have A Larger population. I understand the commuters, and such from the suburbs. Even Fulton county as A whole feel like more that 1.5 Million.

Are you talking about the actual city limits of Atlanta or the entire metro?

Atlanta's core is more developed than Charlotte's, which is probably why it feels larger. This is because Atlanta has a much larger metro population.

It does have A larger Metro Area, But most of the counties outside of Fulton, Gwinett, Cobb, Dekalb, Forsyth, and Cherokee are very very Rural area. Even if Charlotte had as many counties as the Atlanta metro. It would still be significantly smaller. Actually, I just thought about it compared to Charlotte it does feel its size

Not exactly. Charlotte's MSA has 16 counties (none above 1 million yet), Atlanta's MSA has 30 counties I believe with 1 over a million, and three above 700,000. Mecklenburg is the only county in Charlotte's MSA above 700,000.

You could include the nearest 14 counties in addition to Charlotte's MSA and it comes fairly close to Atlanta's MSA, but that's not how it works.
