There's lots of, I'm going to "the city" around the country, but only San Francisco and Manhattan have historic nicknames as such.

In Maryland, we usually say Going into the City when referring to Baltimore or Washington DC... It also depends what part of the state we're in and whether we live closer to DC or Balto. I live right between the two City's so people around me will most likely say the City by it's name.

Philadelphia is "the city" to me but really only certain parts. If I were going to Center city or South Philly I might say "I'm going into the city." If I were going to Manayunk or Germantown or Overbrook I'd just say "I'm going to Manayunk/Germantown/Overbrook."
