The whole no zoning thing is over elaborated IMO. There are informal measures of zoning in Houston called deed restrictions & HOA's. Why do you think the Ashby High Rise is having such a tough time getting approved all these years?

OMG that site...its a complete duplicate of Curbed right down to the fonts. Did someone in Houston get sick of waiting for Curbed to open a Houston branch and decide to just rip them off? They should probably mix up the layout and typography a bit at least. VOX Media owns Curbed now and they are a media conglomerate that would have no qualms about suing Swamplot's proprietor into poverty.

I wasn't aware their website format was patented? Its called a blog, anyone can make one. Besides the font it not identical at all. Swamplot's collage style logo looks nothing like Curbed's logo which is plastered on the side of a building.

I run a web design/development studio for a living, but I'd think that even a layperson would find the similarities to be striking and obvious:

- Both sites have the exact same 500px/140px/300px 3 column layout where column 1 contains the title, lead image, and body text; column 2 contains the tags, comment count, and share icons, and column 3 contains the newsletter signup. That's not a common blog layout, that's Curbed's unique layout.

- Swamplot uses the Oswald typeface for the headlines. Oswald is the freebie Google Fonts knockoff of Trade Gothic, the licensed font that Curbed uses for their headlines.

- Both sites use the same 3 panel featured story layout in the header.

- Both sites start the day with a "Headlines" post featured stories from other blogs and newspapers.

Being that they are both real estate blogs, and being that Curbed hasn't expanded to Houston (yet), its obvious that this guy is just ripping off Curbed while we can get away with it.

I'm not sure why you'd deny something so blatantly obvious. Even the owner of the site admits it:

"Modelled after"/"ripped off", potato/pototo....I guess your perspective depends on whether you're the one who's intellectual property is being stolen or if you're the one doing the stealing.

From my understanding, that new layout is actually new for swamplot.

I am originally from Londo, lived in Houston for 10 years and just moved to L.A.

I live in Coastal OC, near Laguna beach and yes it is paradise here. But the one thing that is a deal breaker is the cost of housing. I lived in a 3500 sq ft Palace on the lake with a boat and fishing pier in Houston and it cost $350k, which is a lot for Texas.

We just spent $1million on a 2200sqft house. We have a pool and a mountain view, 12 mins drive from the beach.

The level of wealth in Socal is unbelievable. Never seen so many Bagattis and McClarens and limited edition lambs in my life.

Houston has a large black community including Nigerians and ethiopians as well as AAs. Absolutely no black people in OC, and virtually non in most of L.A.

I have never seen so many homeless people with mental disorders in my life like L.A. my kids were really shocked by it when we first arrived.

A lot more thugs in Houston. I lived in Sugarland, but we were 10 mins drive away from gang territory. There was a heavy police presence in sugarland to keep criminals away. In OC, I rarely see police because there is no need, the closest low income area is almost 45 mins away.
