Location: Jersey City. Closer to Manhattan, closer to airports, closer to many of the big-ticket entertainment venues in the region
Diversity: Jersey City is one of, if not the most diverse cities in the US. Stamford is not.
Beauty: Stamford has a more natural coastline and some green leafy suburban neighborhoods. Jersey City is beautiful if you prefer the city skyline views, brownstones, etc.
Safety: Overall probably Stamford. However, according to city-data, murder and rape rates are the same in both cities. JC is much higher in assaults, burglary, robberies, and auto theft though.
Shopping: Tie? Stamford Town Center is probably better than Newport Center in JC, but then add some points to JC for more independent shops downtown and in other neighborhoods.
Education: Stamford is probably better overall, but JC has the best public high school in NJ for those lucky enough to get in.
Downtown/Street walk: Jersey City. Area around Grove Street PATH is busier than any street life in Stamford
Cleanliness/Modern/Nicer landscape: probably Stamford overall. JC's waterfront is clean with modern towers, but most of the rest of the city is quite gritty.

Agreed. Also add Liberty State Park for Jersey City's beauty. I love seeing its skyline from across the river in the Battery Park area of Manhattan.

Jersey City has far more character. Stamford feels sterile.
